When we look at screens we blink less and focus at one distance for hours. The result: tired, dry, sometimes blurry eyes and headaches — often called digital eye strain. The good news is that small changes help a lot.
1. Follow the 20-20-20 rule
Every 20 minutes, look at something about 20 feet away for 20 seconds. Set a reminder until it becomes a habit.
2. Blink on purpose
We blink far less while concentrating on a screen. A few slow, full blinks every so often keep your eyes moist.
3. Get your screen position right
Keep your monitor about an arm's length away, with the top of the screen at or slightly below eye level.
4. Fix the lighting
Avoid a bright window directly behind or in front of your screen, and match screen brightness to the room.
5. Make text bigger
If you lean in to read, increase the text size. Your eyes (and neck) will thank you.
6. Check your prescription
Even a small uncorrected power can make screen work tiring. If it's been more than a year or two since your last eye test, it's worth getting checked.
7. Consider computer glasses
Lenses set for screen distance, often with an anti-glare coating, can make long workdays more comfortable — especially for people over 40.
